Precautions For Bay Area Cold Spell

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

It’s freezing in Healdsburg! It has even snowed in the East Bay! Bay Area residents are urged to take precautionary measures for the arctic blast we have been experiencing for a few days now.

For pet owners, it is best to keep your four-legged friends indoors. Pets are susceptible to hypothermia despite their thick coats- and you may have noticed a slight change in their routine or behavior ever since the cold spell. Please have a safe and warm place for your pets to stay in during these times. Get out those extra towels and blankets for your pets as they definitely need them during these below freezing temperatures. Also make sure their beds are away from doors with drafts and not on the floor.

We urge you to take extra precaution when driving. When driving, s low down and give yourself extra space in between cars. It would also help to give yourself extra time to get to your destination. You also need to be on the look out for black ice as it may form on the roads. Fog and rain are expected in the next few days, and it is required that you turn on your headlights and windshield wipers during this time.

Motorists are also encouraged to bang the hoods of their cars before starting their engines as some critters may take shelter

At home, it is best to avoid water pipe breaks by insulating all exposed swimming pools, outdoor pipes, sprinkler systems and swimming pools using old blankets and towels. For pipes that have actually frozen already, you may use your blow dryer and switch it to its lowest setting.

Bundle up and stay warm!
