If you’d like to try a delicious roast of coffee, which is locally owned and operated, tryout the Flying Goat.  They have the standard varieties to choose from — cappuccinos and lattes — as well as some creative blends.  If you’re visiting, they have a 1/2 pound pack they can grind and you can take it back to your vacation rental, or take a larger pack home.  After you drink your fresh brewed cup of coffee, walk on over the the plaza square and enjoy people watching, shopping, free concerts or the Tuesday night Farmer’s Market in summer.  If you like something sweet with your coffee, try the chocolate shops on Center Street — Powell’s and Sweet Memory.

Biking Healdsburg

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

A great bicycle route in the Healdsburg countryside begins in the Dry Creek Valley.  You can start on either side, West Dry Creek Road, or Dry Creek Road, or in the middle for a shorter loop at Lambert Bridge.  There are multiple wineries along the way, Farm Trails, picnic and view spots, and Dry Creek Store where you can pick up fabulous lunch or breakfast delights.  At the start of Dry Creek Road is Big John’s supermarket offering fresh product, cheese, meats, deli, and more. About 2 miles in begins the route in earnest where Lytton Springs can take you in another direction entirely, and wineries such as Wilson, Nalle, Mauritson, Dry Creek offer their hospitality to our visitors.  Now either cut over Lambert Bridge and back toward town on West Dry Creek Road, and pass by Lambert Bridge, Everett Ridge and Alderbrook, or continue to Yoakim Bridge Road and cut over to West Dry Creek Road.  This route takes you passed Preston, Bella Wine Caves, Quivara, Rafanelli, Raymond Burr, and many more.  You might even meet a new friend along the way, as there are many bike enthusiasts who love this route.  It’s a winner!

Costeaux’s French Bakery and Cafe

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

A Healdsburg favorite that features award winning desserts and sourdough breads has been around since 1923.  It was recently remodeled and looks amazing!  Costeaux’s offers an open air cafe that serves delicious breakfast and lunches.  When you are in town it is a must that you stop by and try anyone of their delectable treats!  My favorites are the tuna melt sandwich, the chocolate chip and chocolate fudge crinkle cookies, and the raisin bread (baked fresh daily).  If you’re feeling decadent try the White chocolate raspberry tart.  Phew!  The extremely friendly staff and management help make it a more memorable and pleasant experience.  A great place to stop and have coffee after all the wine tasting!

Powells Sweet Shoppe

A must, must, must when you’re visiting the plaza in Healdsburg! Who on earth doesn’t love chocolate and candy?

As soon as you walk in, you’ll feel like you’re a little kid again. You’ll find endless bins and the sweet smells combination of hard candy, red ropes, bubble gum, jawbreakers and chocolates galore. Look up, and you’ll notice Willie Wonka playing on the big television! They have hundreds of variations of Pez dispensers which is awesome. I walked out with a storm trooper Pez dispenser a handful of candy of course, and strawberry pop rock’s in my mouth.

The best pizza I’ve ever had, is a place that recently opened in the Vine Street Plaza in Healdsburg called Pizza Gourmet. (They’ll also deliver!) The pizza is called Barbecue Chicken Pizza. The chicken is marinated overnight, the sauce is tangy, the onions are carmelized and the flavors are just delicious. To call in an order, 707-473-0108
